It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Tarun Mukherjee on June 11, 2024, at the age of 78.

With a heavy heart, we announce Dr. Tarun Mukherjee's passing on June 11, 2024, at the age of 78. Dr. Mukherjee was a passionate and dedicated finance professor at the University of New Orleans, where he taught undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students for over 43 years. His research in Corporate Finance, which spanned topics such as corporate governance, capital structure, and capital budgeting, has garnered over three thousand citations, offering valuable insights into the fields of finance and economics.


Dr. Mukherjee made a lasting impact on the field of finance through both his academic contributions and mentorship. His work continues to influence current and future scholars, shaping the understanding and practices within Corporate Finance.


A strong supporter of the Southwestern Finance Association, Dr. Mukherjee served as a board member and sponsor. He was a fixture at annual meetings and received the award for Best Paper in Corporate Finance in 2012. He also made a significant impact as the Editor-in-Chief of the Review of Financial Economics (RFE) for over two decades, elevating the journal’s prominence and quality, and achieving Scopus and ESCI rankings. Under his leadership, the journal actively supported young researchers, funding research awards for SWFA finance doctoral students.


Dr. Mukherjee was deeply committed to helping others and was an inspiring educator, researcher, and colleague. Originally from Rampurhat, India, Dr. Mukherjee began his academic journey as a history major before transferring to Texas Tech University, where he earned both his MBA and PhD in Finance. After receiving his PhD, he joined the faculty at UNO. During his tenure, he established the Kali Charan Mukherjee Endowed Scholarship in Finance and donated $100,000 to create the Kali C. and Sushila B. Mukherjee Student-Managed Fund and the Kali and Sushila Mukherjee Trading Lab, named in honor of his parents. These initiatives provided students with invaluable real-world experience in portfolio management.
